The London Coliseum
is one of London’s largest and grandest. It opened on Christmas Eve,
1904 with a variety bill performance. Since then it has hosted
playwright W. S. Gilbert’s last play ‘The Hooligan’, and 651 shows of
the clearly popular musical comedy, ‘White Horse Inn’. In 2004
and 2006 the theatre returned to its roots, hosting the Royal Variety
Performances, which Prince Charles attended. |

As
a 14th birthday treat in August 1914, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (later
to become Queen and then the Queen Mother) was taken by her parents to
a show at the London Coliseum. On exactly the same day her future
father-in-law, King George V, declared war on Germany. |
