Whether it be taverns or musical halls, a place of entertainment in some form has stood on the site of the New London Theatre since Elizabethan times. The one we see today was officially opened in 1973. It has hosted Grease, with Richard Gere starring as Danny, and also Andrew Lloyd Webber and Trevor Nunn’s musical Cats. This famous work has been a huge success, becoming the longest running musical ever in West End history. The New London Theatre has also hosted the BBD Sports Personality of the Year Award, The Eurovision Song Contest, and the music video for Queen’s famous We Are the Champions was filmed here. More recently the Royal Shakespeare company have used the theatre to put on productions starring Ian McKellen, including King Lear.
