opened in 1860 and it was formed in two parts: the western side,
occupied by the Brighton company, while the Chatham company occupied a
less imposing wooden-fronted building. Each side of the station had its
own entrance and a separate station master. The two sections were
finally connected in 1924. Today, although one station, it is still
operated in 2 halves, with the Kent side providing services to Medway
towns and the Kent coast and the remainder serving routes to Sussex.
Over 115 million people pass through the station each year. |
